My "reluctant return," as I've come to call it, is a story many expats can relate to: the bittersweet tug between the life you built abroad and the pull of home – or, in my case, a less-than-sunny version of it.

This wasn't a planned homecoming. For five years, California had been my haven, a land of opportunity and endless sunshine.
